Philippine BPO to Keep Growing Despite AI

November 11, 2019

The Philippine BPO (business process outsourcing) sector is expected to keep growing in the next 10 years despite the rise of artificial intelligence (AI).

BPOs have already started to upskill and retrain their employees for high-skilled jobs in order to reduce the impact of AI. AI can also create more opportunities for higher level services in BPO, according to IT and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) president Rey Untal.

New Jobs from New Technology

Untal added that technology, including AI, will create new jobs we are not even aware of.

Leechiu Property Consultants co-founder and CEO David Leechiu explained that the Philippines is in a “sweet spot” because of the BPO industry and remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), two pillars of the economy that have insulated the country from global shocks and made it extremely resilient. He pointed out that outsourcing protected the country from the negative effects of the U.S.-China trade war.
