Unless you’ve been living in a cave or under a rock for the last few months, you’ve probably already heard of House of the Dragon – the prequel to the crowd-favorite Game of Thrones series. The much-awaited American fantasy drama series premiered on August 21, 2022, racking up 327 million minutes of viewing time on HBO Max in the few hours after its 9 p.m. debut and ranking 3rd on Nielsen’s acquired series rankings on its premiere week.
House of the Dragon is based on parts of the Fire & Blood novel by George R. R. Martin and is set is 200 years before the events on Game of Thrones, 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, and 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms is united by the Targaryen Conquest. The series depicts the beginning of the end for House Targaryen, the events leading up to and during the Targaryen civil war of succession – the “Dance of the Dragons.”
Much like Game of Thrones, the series introduces new characters from Westeros that viewers are bound to love, hate, and everything in between but one of the most exciting elements of House of the Dragons is the introduction of more Targaryen Dragons. Fans of the GOT universe have been buzzing about what the CGI versions of the Dragons will look like for months – even years! – leading up to the release of the series and now that Targaryen Dragons are being introduced throughout the series, viewers have gotten to know their skills, strengths, and personalities.
This got us thinking, can you imagine what these dragons would be like as human beings? Now imagine those humans as your work colleagues! To get to know these formidable forces better, we’ve created this list featuring the Powerful Dragons in HOTD as the 10 most common workplace personality types.
WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD
Vermax: The Analyst
By the time the Dance of the Dragons began, Vermax was big enough to be ridden by Jacaerys Velaryon. This allowed Vermax and Jacaerys to be a messenger for his mother, flying north on a successful mission to deal with Jeyne Arryn the Lady of the Eyrie, Desmond Manderly, the Lord of White Harbor, and Cregan Stark, the Lord of Winterfell. Prince Jacaerys also uses Vermax in the Battle of the Esophagus.
In the workplace, Vermax fits into the Analyst archetype. Analysts in the workplace are typically focused and as the name suggests, analytical. They are critical thinkers and very strategic in their approach. Analysts are also logical observers that like to know everything that’s happening and analyze each move – fitting perfectly into Vermax’s role as a messenger and serving as an extra set of eyes in the sky.
Caraxes: The Climber
In the series, Caraxes is depicted as a “huge huge red dragon that was both massive and lean, while being quite battle savvy.” Caraxes was given the nickname “Blood Wyrm” after the Dragonkeepers described him as the fiercest of all the young dragons in the dragon pit.
In the workplace, it’s easy to imagine Caraxes as the Climber. They are highly motivated and driven professionals with strong goal orientation and high productivity. Just like Caraxes, the Climbers are the fiercest professionals in the workplace because they are willing to go the extra mile in the pursuit of progressing their career and achieving whatever their goals are. They have high expectations set for themselves and will always put in 100% effort in everything they do.
Balerion: The Guardian
Balerion, also known as the Black Dread, with black wings, scales, and fire. Balerion is described to be “so powerful that his flames could melt steel and stone, as well as fuse sand into glass. His teeth were as long as swords and his jaws were large enough to swallow a hairy mammoth. Balerion was willful and not a beast to play with.” This fierce dragon is long dead when the events of House of the Dragon unfolds but Balerion’s head can be seen on display in the Red Keep.
In the workplace, Balerion would definitely be the Guardian. Much like Balerion’s skull in the series, Guardians watch over all other “dragons” in the workplace. Guardians place high importance on structure and order within the workplace. They have an “all-seeing eye” in the workplace and are often times reserved, methodical, and detail-oriented.
Seasmoke: The Illusionist
Seasmoke is a pale and silver-hued dragon described to be younger and more nimble compared to others. This dragon bonded to Laenor Velaryon while he was still young. In the series, Seasmoke is considered a “wild” dragon since Laenor faked his death but still remains in the possession of Rhaenyra and her sons.
With Seasmoke’s nimble and agile ways, in the workplace, he will be a perfect Illusionist. Illusionists in the workplace portray themselves as a preferable personality type. These types of professionals are quick-thinkers and good judges of character which helps them modify their ways to fit the colleagues that they’re dealing with. Illusionists are the chameleons of the workplace.
Meleys: The Individualist
Meleys, also known as the Red Queen, was considered to be one of the fastest dragons in Westeros and was formidable in battle. In the series, however, she eventually became lazy and could no longer outrun (or should we say outfly?) the other dragons.
In the workplace, Meleys would fit the Individualist archetype. Even if an individualist is working as a part of a team, they prefer to handle their responsibilities in their own way. They also prefer a hands-off approach when being managed and are at their best when given freedom. Individualists are not the type of professionals that would compete. They know their worth and do not like wasting time proving themselves to others. Individualists prefer to be judged based on their output and the results of their work.
Syrax: The People-Pleaser
Syrax is portrayed as a young dragon with yellow scales who is ridden by Rhaenyra Targaryen. She is a female dragon described as “huge and fearsome but not as experienced in battle as Caraxes.” In House of the Dragon, Syrax was chained and extremely well-fed, but had not hunted in years when the events of the Dance of Dragons took place.
Taking into account Syrax’s more timid personality compared to the other dragons, in the workplace, she will definitely be the People-Pleaser. A People-Pleaser loves to be liked by others which often means that they are socially skillful. In the workplace, these types of professionals promote camaraderie and build beneficial relationships in the workplace.
Vhaghar: The Pioneer
Vhagar is a female dragon that’s known to be the oldest and largest living Targaryen dragon during the events of the Dance of the Dragons. She was also one of the legendary dragons that first conquered Westeros – along with Balerion and Maraxes. Originally ridden by Visenya Targaryen, Vhaghar has also been claimed by King Viserys’ son, Aemond “One Eye” Targaryen.
Taking into account Vhaghar’s battle experience and the wisdom that she acquired with age, in the workplace she will be the Pioneer. Pioneers are viewed as the leaders of the workplace pack. They are viewed as the trailblazers that pave the way for innovation and growth. This archetype of professionals is independent-minded, clever, and produces original ideas that inspire others.
Dreamfyre: The Motivator
Dreamfyre is described as “the oldest dragoness in Martin’s novels, a slender, pale blue creature with silver markings, silver crests, and blue wings ridden by Helaena Targaryen.” This female dragon is known to be the mother of several other dragons including the egg that Daemon and Rhaenyra fought over at the start of the series. Fan theories also say that Dreamfyre was the mother of the eggs that became Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal.
As a mother dragon, Dreamfyre would be the Motivator in the workplace. Motivators are often high-energy employees who are great facilitators, mentors, and team builders. Although viewers have not seen Dreamfyre up close yet, her motherly capabilities align with the Motivator’s penchant for pushing themselves and their co-workers to be their best.
Sunfyre: The Perfectionist
Sunfyre is one of the dragons that the series has alluded to but viewers have not officially met yet. This male dragon is described as “the most magnificent dragon to ever fly in Westeros” and is ridden by Aegon Targaryen. Sunfyre is known to be fierce and powerful with golden scales that shine in the sun earning him the moniker of Sunfyre the Golden.
In the workplace, Sunfyre fits the description of the Perfectionist. Just like Sunfyre, Perfectionists are the “golden boys/girls” of the workplace. These types of professionals aim to deliver their best possible work at all times. This means that Perfectionists show incredible attention to detail and can deliver impressive final products. They tend to be extremely reliable teammates with their natural ability to compartmentalize, organize, and problem-solve.
Moondancer: The Performer
Moondancer is described as “a young dragon that’s pale green, small and very fast” that’s ridden by Baela Targaryen. In Fire & Blood, Moondancer stays in Peyredragon with Baela for the first two years of the Dance of the Dragons. Moondancer, despite being smaller, was far more nimble than Sunfyre.
In the workplace, Moondancer’s speed and flexibility would make for a great Performer. Performers in the workplace are employees who love to be the center of attention and are natural-born socialites. Performers love to have fun and often inspire a happy environment in the workplace. This archetype of professionals is the life of any party and can handle chaos well.
Just like these majestic creatures, every professional in the workplace takes on different roles within their teams. With colleagues like this, the workplace will certainly be full of fierce rockstar employees that feed off of each other’s passion and inspire others outside their bubble. Honestly, probably blood, sweat, and tears on a regular basis but nobody ever said that greatness comes easy! Which of the dragons do you identify with most?
