Spilled Tea, Miscommunication, Technical Difficulties, and… Mercury Retrograde?

October 18, 2022

How has your past month been? You may be deep into the remote work set-up since the pandemic started or you may have been telecommuting way before but have you experienced a different kind of mishap in the past three weeks? If you noticed a new level of miscommunication or impulsive decisions starting September 9 of 2022 and have felt a bit better since October 2nd, that’s probably all caused by Mercury Retrograde.

While not many believe in this particular way of how the universe works, one can’t help but blame the lonely planet of Mercury for all the setbacks it brings, as it literally moves backward from its orbit.

A study from Harvard Business Review shows that one of the most common challenges that work-from-home employees face is communication. The abrupt transition to a fully working hybrid brought upon by the pandemic was faced by many especially in the Business Process Outsourcing industry. The workforce that was accustomed to working onsite with full equipment set up in their respective offices were challenged to continue their tasks remotely in their homes. It affects many in more ways than one. Being closed to four walls, finding entertainment in the smartest littlest devices, scrolling endlessly through what could be… everything.

Having been preoccupied with our screens, in this day and age, information can easily spread as fast as lightning. Now, as much as we can see this innovation in a greener light when it comes to valid and important information during the past weeks, social hubs have only seen red. There’s been multiple claims and gossip that have been revealed across every platform. From celebrities, online personalities, local media, and maybe even within your workplace.

We’re not here to validate any excuse about the challenges that may have occurred to you during those weeks but there really could be unusual mishaps and misunderstandings that may have unexpectedly happened. Nothing you can’t improve on though! Here are some tips on how you can stay on top of the communication game when working from home:

1. Check your internet connection.

Before logging into work or clocking in for the day, give yourself time to test and make sure that your internet connection is stable for the day. You can also check the weather forecast for the day to see if it will affect your internet connection and have a backup in case you need it.

2.Test your audio and other devices before you join a meeting.

Headphone and speaker devices are always connected to your laptop or pc for regular communications within your team. Working from home has made virtual meetings as effective as possible, making collaboration easier through verbal communication even from afar. If most of your meetings require you to have your camera on, check your background and surroundings if anything may distract you from your meetings.

3. Start your day earlier.

Working from home may seem like you have all the time in the world, but that can be misleading. You do get extra hours that you usually allot for preparing and traveling to the office, and it would be wise to use that time to get up and prepare yourself for another day at work! Take a short walk or a quick run to get a jumpstart for the day.

4. Clean your workstation.

It’s been said and done, a messy and unorganized desk can lead you to unaccountable distractions. Clean your workstation the way it will work for you. Make sure that only necessary things are on your desk.

5. Have your cup of coffee!

Prepare and drink your cup of coffee or maybe tea. In any case, start your day with a boost. You can even have a healthy alternative like an energy boosting smoothie. Caffeine helps drive away sleepiness and fatigue – keeping you on your toes and awake for the day.

No matter how the world, or the universe, works with its mysterious ways and no matter how many times we blame catastrophic circumstances to how the planets revolve, how the stars align, and how our horoscopes affect our lives, a professional never buckles. These incidents are inevitable but there are most definitely ways that you can stay at your best.
