House of the Dragons Characters as the 12 Zodiac Signs

October 24, 2022

As the first season of House of the Dragon comes to an end, we’re once again closing a chapter in George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones universe. With an average of 29 Million viewers per episode, it’s no surprise that the well-received series is renewed for season 2.

To tide you over until the late 2023 predicted release of House of the Dragon season 2, let’s look back at some of the characters we loved (and hated!) in season 1. Get to know their personalities and motives better as we scrutinize them as the 12 signs of the zodiac.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

Aries: Corlys Velaryon

Corlys was known as the greatest seafarer of the Seven Kingdoms which earned him his alias, “Sea Snake”. A fabled Lord of the Tides, Master of Driftmark, and head of House Velaryon, Corlys was said to be as brilliant as he was restless and as adventurous as he was ambitious. We can’t imagine Corlys as anything but an Aries.

True to its nature as a Fire element zodiac, Aries are extremely driven and ambitious – they love to be number one.  While we love our Aries friends for their courage and determination, it can just as easily be their bane – much like Corlys, Aries often accomplish much in life but are seldom satisfied.

Taurus: Criston Cole

Introduced in the first episode, Ser Criston Cole was a knight from House Cole who rose to become Lord Commander of the Kingsguard for Viserys I Targaryen. Criston is common-born, the son of Lord Dondarrion’s steward. As we got to know Criston better in the following episodes, his affinity with the Eart sign Taurus becomes more apparent.

Taurus are known for their consistency, reliability, and dedication. However, what a Taurus sees as dedication, others often regard as stubbornness. Criston’s practicality and loyalty is displayed in his relationship with Rhaenyra Targaryen. When things go sour between them, Criston bestows his dedication to Alicent and serves as her loyal sword for more than ten years – even teaching her sons how to fight.

As the series progressed, we saw the full extent of a Taurus’ dedication – or stubbornness – as Criston continues to foster ill feelings toward Rhaenyra. Like the tenacity of the bull that represents the zodiac Taurus, it’s all or nothing for Ser Criston Cole – there is no in between.

Gemini: Rhaenyra Targaryen

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen is the first-born child of King Viserys I Targaryen and the King’s only living child with his first wife, Queen Aemma of House Arryn. While Rhaenyra can be charming and childlike, she is also proud and stubborn – quick to anger and never forgetting a slight. Her personality resonates with the duality of the Air sign Gemini perfectly.

Geminis are driven by their spontaneity and curiosity. In the series, we see Rhaenyra put this into practice by always looking for ways to improve her position and prove that she is a worthy queen. Rhaenyra is not afraid to speak her mind or stand up for herself or her beliefs – just like a Gemini, she’s intellectual and eloquent.

Cancer: Viserys I Targaryan

Viserys I Targaryen is the fifth Targaryen king to sit the Iron Throne. As a King, Viserys is amiable, open-handed and eager to please. When he makes a decision, Viserys becomes unwavering and will firmly stand by his choices.

Just like the highly intuitive Water sign Cancer, King Viserys is a loyal and loving ruler who was known for his generosity.  Like most of our Cancer friends, King Viserys tends to take on other people’s problems which highlights his protective and sympathetic nature.

Viserys only has one boundary but it is very firm. He can be overemotional and unable to let go of things that he may deem as a betrayal. Cancers will give you the world – but they will expect you to return the favor.

Leo: Otto Hightower

Ser Otto Hightower was a knight from House Hightower who served as Hand of the King to three kings. He is the father of  Alicent Hightower, the second queen of King Viserys I Targaryen, and Ser Gwayne Hightower, second in command of the gold cloaks.

Considered a man of great learning in his time, Otto was a methodical cunning man. Proud, blunt, and domineering Otto is the character that everyone loves to hate this season!

It’s only fitting that we classify Otto as the Fire sign that all other zodiac love to hate – the Leo. Leos are known for their really big personalities and living up to their lion representation as “King (or Queen) of the Celestial Jungle.” A Leo loves to embrace their imagined royal status and it might not be for everyone. Otto’s haters would say that he’s arrogant, stubborn, and self-centered. But past this extravagant exterior, you have to respect his drive and passion. Just like a Leo, Otto Hightower is always thinking ahead and gunning for glory – cementing his reputation as a dangerous opponent and a great hand to any King.

Virgo: Aemond Targaryen

Prince Aemond Targaryen is the second son of King Viserys I Targaryen with his second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower, and the younger brother of King Aegon II Targaryen.

At birth, Aemond was said to be half the size his older brother Aegon had been, though he was twice as fierce. Aemond grew up to be a dangerous swordsman. Dependable and hard-working Aemond is a typical Earth sign, particularly a Virgo.

A classic Virgo, Aemond is bold, wild, and willful. However, he can also be hot-tempered, and unforgiving. Aemond has a knack for needing to feel useful and to have a quick fix for everything.  While these are all strengths, it can also mean that like most Virgos, Aemond is all work and no play which makes him overly critical of himself and others.

Libra: Larys Strong

Larys Strong serves on the small council as the master of whisperers and Lord Confessor. He is the Lord of Harrenhal and head of House Strong during the latter part of the reign of Viserys I Targaryen and the reign of Aegon II Targaryen.

Larys rarely spoke and preferred to listen. When he did speak, it was to share words of great importance. Just like the Air sign Libra, he approaches life from a logical standpoint. Larys Strong was an enigmatic and cunning man.

Although he could be convincing and amiable when needed, he was largely friendless. Balance, harmony, and fairness defines Larys’ Libra energy. Larys’ sense of justice and equilibruim means that he sees every side but due to the fickle nature of the Air signs of the zodiac, he can also be prone to fantasy.

Scorpio: Alicent Hightower

Alicent Hightower is the second wife to King Viserys I Targaryen. She is a member of House Hightower and the daughter of Otto Hightower, who had been Hand of the King to Jaehaerys I, Viserys I, and later his grandson Aegon II.

Alicent is the mother of King Aegon II, Queen Helaena, Prince Aemond and Prince Daeron. In the series, Alicent is depicted as clever and charismatic with an emotional approach to life – like the Water sign Scorpio.

Scorpios are the most misunderstood sign of the zodiac. Often times they are elusive and mysterious. A Scorpio is determined and always suspicious of people and is  ruled by Mars and Pluto which explain their “hot and cold” personality. Just like a true Scorpio, while Alicent can be friendly and tend to people-please, she can also be very cunning and have a need to take control of situations – almost like she has two different personalities.

Sagittarius: Daemon Targaryen

Prince Daemon Targaryen is a member of House Targaryen. He is the younger son of Prince Baelon Targaryen and the brother of King Viserys I Targaryen. Daemon was the second husband of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Princess of Dragonstone.

Daemon is depicted as  most experienced warrior of his time. He’s described as dashing, daring, and dangerous. The Fire & Blood series even goes on to say that Daemon is “as charming as he was hot-tempered.” Sounds like a true Sagittarius to us!

Sagittarius is known to be the most outgoing, bold, and daring sign of the zodiac. This fire sign knows no bounds which means that they are great explorers and cannot sit still for too long. Even though he can be impulsive and restless at times, there is no doubt that Daemon possesses the charisma and charm that comes with being a Sagittarius.

Capricorn: Laenor Velaryon

Ser Laenor Velaryon is the only son of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. He is the heir to Driftmark and the first husband of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. Laenor was known to have a lack of interest in women. He preferred to surround himself with handsome young men of his own age.

In the House of the Dragon series, episode 5 confirms the rumors that Laenor Velaryon is gay. But he doesn’t let his preferences get in the way of his obligations. Just like the responsible and practical Capricorn, Laenor is motivated by duty and represses any emotion that gets in the way of his success.

As an Earth sign, we see Laenor’s disciplined and self-control in his agreement with Rhaenyra in which they each “dine” as they please while still upholding their duties as a married couple. Laenor and Rhaenyra’s amicable marriage ensures that she has the strength of House Velaryon behind her as she fights for the Iron Throne.

Aquarius: Helaena Targaryen

Queen Helaena Targaryen is the sister-wife of King Aegon II Targaryen and is the only daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen with his second wife, Alicent Hightower. In the series, Helaena is known for reciting prophecies which foreshadow upcoming events. With her unusual and mystical qualities, Helaena remains pleasant and happy – despite her rocky marriage to Aegon.

Just like the Air sign Aquarius, Helaena is compassionate and unselfish. Aquarians are represented by the water bearer, the mystical healer who bestows life. In the books, Helaena is an excellent mother and, as queen, she was loved by the smallfolk.

As an Air sign, Helaena Targaryen is intelligent and eloquent – speaking her prophecies through riddles. Like most people born under this zodiac sign, Helaena is a mystery. She may sometimes appear like an outcast when in fact, she can just be unemotional and detached.

Pisces: Laena Velaryon

Lady Laena Velaryon is the eldest child and only daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. She’s also the second wife of Prince Daemon Targaryen and mother to twin daughters, Rhaena and Baela Targaryen.

Somehow both an old soul and young-at-heart, Laena Velaryon is known for her creativity and beauty. She is free-spirited and loves to have fun. Just like the Water sign Pisces, Laena prefers to “go with the flow.”

Laena Velaryon is an independent woman who knows what she wants. She is a romantic and remains very loyal to her husband – standing by him even when she doesn’t necessarily agree with him. Don’t get on her bad side though, this Velaryon knows no boundaries and will use all her resources to get what she deserves.

We’ll definitely miss seeing these characters every Monday! But now that the first season of House of the Dragon is wrapping up, our FitCrew needs a new series to help them destress after work. Leave us a comment and share what you’re binge-watching next.
